Plus! 98 on Windows 95

Post by Battler »

How do I install Plus! 98 on Windows 95? It seems it does some version checks, is there any way to bypass them?

Most Plus!98 components are incompatible with Windows 95, so even if you could bypass the version check (it does a standard Windows API call to version.dll), the components wouldn't work on 95.

Only a handful of Plus!98 components are compatible with Windows 95, such as Spider Solitaire and the desktop themes. You can simply extract the relevant files manually from plus98.cab.

Additionally, if you want a way to implement and configure gradient title bars into Windows 95 for taking better advantage of the themes, you can do so by overwriting the files with these ones from Memphis 1387:
GDI.EXE
GDI32.DLL
SHELL.DLL
USER.EXE
USER32.DLL
And then overwrite these two other files with those from Memphis 1423 or 1434:
DESK.CPL
DESKCP16.DLL
Afterwards you should be able to customize gradients just as you would in Windows 98 and beyond.

Well, I mostly wanted to use ZIP folders, but thanks for the tip, I'll try to get the gradient title bars to work.

ZIP folders relies on the call GetDiskFreeSpaceEx, which is only available on Windows 95 OSR2 and above, so it will not work on the original Windows 95. It also requires IE4 installed.

You really need to install it on Windows 98 to make it work, a lot of components were added to 98 that were not there in 95

Plus! 98 is designed for Windows 98, so most of its application will not be compatible in Windows 95, although they may run successfully. You had better install it in Windows 98.

I've been successful dragging around PLUS 98 and using it on 2000, XP, and 7

... I have not had the nerve to ' apply ' settings on 10 yet, but it did run.

If you can't prove it didn't happen then it must be true and you are probably part of the cover-up.
